Amazon Kindle How-To Series: Fast Steps to Creating Free Kindle E-Books

Fans of Amazon’s Kindle e-book reader have plenty of content from which to choose. Amazon offers over 260,000 (as of this writing) e-books, newspapers, magazines, and other publications that can be transmitted by wireless to the Kindle. With all of this content you may wonder if you’ll ever need another source for your reading enjoyment. But think of all of the other content you may have stored away in your computer in the form of Adobe Acrobat .pdf files, text files, or .HTML files you’ve downloaded from the Internet. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to put these on your Kindle as well?

As a matter of fact you can! There are several ways you can do this. Amazon offers a file conversion service for Kindle owners. Check our web site at the address below for an article that provides the steps to use Amazon’s service. But, there is another way that we’ll describe in this article and that is with the Mobipocket Creator software. Mobipocket Creator software is designed to convert documents into the Mobi .prc format that can be read by the Mobipocket e-book Reader software for PCs and for phones using the Palm Os, Windows Mobile, Symbian Os, and Blackberry operating systems. Interestingly Amazon owns Mobipocket and the Amazon Kindle’s book format is based on the Mobipocket format.

What does this mean to you? It means that files you convert with the Mobipocket Creator software can be loaded onto your Kindle through your computer and read as any other Kindle e-book! Here are the instructions for converting your files with Mobipocket Creator software:

1. Realize that this software ONLY works with unprotected files. If the file you want to convert have any sort of DRM (digital rights management) protection then you cannot convert your books.

2. Download the Mobipocket Creator software from Mobipocket’s web site – you’ll find the link below. Make sure you download the “Publisher” edition and not the “Home” edition. The current version is 4.2.

3. Install Mobipocket Creator software on your PC following the installation instructions.

4. Open Mobipocket Creator – you will be at the “Home” page.

5. You will see “Import From Existing File” on the right side of the “Home” page. For this example we’ll convert an Adobe Acrobat file so choose “Adobe PDF” from the menu – this will bring you to the Import File Wizard.

6. Choose the file you wish to convert (using the “Browse” button) and the location in which you wish to place the imported file (again – use the “Browse” button). Click the “Import” button.

7. You will be brought to a work screen that shows you the Publication File or files you’ve imported. From here you can either build your final output to save on your Kindle, or modify some of the options for your e-book.

8. If you wish to add a Cover Image or Table of Contents choose the appropriate menu items under the “View” menu on the left side of the program window. You also can modify a number of settings for your e-book and add or modify the book’s metadata by choosing other options under the “View” menu. Note that you do not have to modify any of the settings under the “View” menu – they are there as options for your use if you choose.

9. When you are done click the “Build” button on the toolbar at the top of the program window. You will be brought to the “Build Publication” window. You can choose the compression settings for your e-book (“Standard” is fine for your Kindle) and also encryption options (choose “No Encryption”). Click the “Build” button just above the progress bars when you are ready to create your e-book.

10. You will go next to the “Build finished” window.  This window will let you know if you’ve successfully created your e-book. You may get a message that says “Build succeeded but with warnings.” Normally this indicates a minor error or notification such as when you choose not to add a cover to your e-book. This will not prevent you from loading the e-book onto your Kindle.

11. Click the “Open folder containing eBook” then click “OK.” The folder you provided in step 6 will open and you will see a number of files. This will include your initial Adobe PDF file,  plus files with the extension .html, .opf, .xml, and .jpg. You also will see the file you need to transfer to your Kindle, the file with the extension .prc.

12. Attach your Kindle to your computer using the USB cable. Open your Kindle and locate the “documents” folder. Copy the .prc file you created with Mobipocket Creator into your Kindle’s download folder. Close the Kindle > documents window and disconnect your Kindle by opening “My Computer”, right clicking on the “Kindle” drive icon, and selecting “Eject” from the menu.

13. Your new document will appear on your Kindle’s Home Page. You may need to refresh your Home Page view by pressing and holding down the “ALT” key and then pressing the “Z” key.

14. You can now enjoy your new Kindle e-book.

This process will work for Microsoft Word (.doc), Adobe Acrobat (.pdf), Text (.txt), and HTML files. You can download the Mobipocket Creator software from the Mobipocket web site – http://www.mobipocket.com.

By the way – if your new e-book file does not appear the way you expect on your Kindle 2 and you wish to delete if from your Kindle simply highlight the book and move the 5-way navigator to the left.  The “delete” button will appear, press down on the 5-way navigator and then confirm the delete.

Congratulations! You now know how-to convert files into e-books you can read on your Kindle wireless reading device.

The Top 10 Business Books Ever

I’ve read a lot of business mindset related books over the past ten years. Some were excellent, some should have stayed in the authors head and never made it to paper.

Although I believe I can express many of the ideas I’ve learned from these books quite well, I’ll never be able to express the ideas as well as the original authors, and nor should I try.

That’s why I’ve spent the last hour digging out the top ten books from my business book shelves and sorting them into order. The order is based on the impact they had on me personally. Books expressing new and life changing ideas ranked the highest. Books that my Aunt could have written never made it to the list at all.

Ok, starting with number ten…

10 – Who Moved My Cheese – Dr Spencer Johnson

Suitable for any age and taking only an hour to read this book is a must for anyone who is seeking something better in life. Whether it’s freedom, wealth, love or health, it’ll help you find what you’re looking for in a changing world.

9 – Buzz Marketing – Mark Hughes

This book is the one you might find surprising. You may have heard of all of the other books in my top ten but this one was a surprise to me too. Not being a well known classic, I didn’t expect it to such a fantastic book and so well written.

8 – The Tipping Point – Malcolm Gladwell

This book really is a classic. If you’ve ever wondered what makes some products or trends take off worldwide while others just fall by the wayside, this book will enlighten you. Filled with real life case studies this book is a must read.

7 – The Long Tail – Chris Anderson

We’re no longer restricted to just a few blockbuster movies, or the books in your bookstore, or the songs in your music store. The Internet has given us almost infinite choice, even in the tiniest of niches. This book explains how to capitalise on this and make money from the “long tail”.

6 – The 4-Hour Work Week – Timothy Ferris

Ever fancied outsourcing most of your business and some of you life so you can spend your time doing the things you enjoy? Of course, that’s why you’re reading this and that’s why you should read this book. It changes everything.

5 – The Richest Man In Babylon – George S. Clason

A little like Who Moved My Cheese in that it won’t take long to read and it’s suitable for all ages. It lays down the fundamental principles of building wealth which everyone should know. I’ve read it three times and I still love it.

4 – Rich Dad, Poor Dad 2 The Cashflow Quadrant – Robert T Kiyosaki

This is the sequel to number three below. It builds on the principles in the first book and details what the author calls the cashflow quadrant. Don’t be put off by the terminology, this book really did change my life for the better.

3 – Rich Dad, Poor Dad – Robert T Kiyosaki

Before you read the sequel above you should read this one. If you’re still doing your day job and are looking for a better life this book is a real life changer. I should warn you that this book will enlighten you so fundamentally that you’ll never think the same way about work, business or money again. Be prepared for change if you read this.

2 – The E Myth Revisited – Michael E. Gerber

Written by one of the top small business consultants in the world this book explains why most small businesses fail. More importantly it explains how to design your business so that it gives you exactly what you want from it. If every small business owner read this book I truly believe the failure statistics would reduce dramatically. I’ve read this one twice too and I plan to read it again soon.

1 – Think and Grow Rich – Napoleon Hill

This is a true classic. It’s such a classic that I bought the rights to an audio version and I give the first two chapters away free as my email list sign up incentive. I often listen to it in my car and on my iPod and I’ve even read the paper version twice. It details the results of a twenty five year study on the wealth building secrets of over five hundred of the wealthiest people in the world. It’s broken down into thirteen principles which anyone can follow. The reason it’s my number one is that it’s basically been my reference book and my business bible. If you only read one book this year it should be this one.

I hope you found this list useful. I’m currently reading Getting Things Done by David Allen which is excellent. I’ve also bought Influencer which I plan to read next. I’m always looking for new books to read so if you have any suggestions I’d love to hear them, feel free to email me.

Selling on Amazon Marketplace – How to Figure out the Saleability and Market Value of Your Books

Would you like to sell your books on Amazon marketplace? Before you start listing, why not figure out if it will be worth your while. Read on to discover how to check the saleability of your books and CDs.

Check the listings

Gather up your stash of books and go to Amazon and type in the title/author of the first book, or enough information to make that book come up on the screen.

There are two things you’ll want to check: the price for which used books are selling, and how popular the book is.

How to determine what to sell

Personally, I limit myself to books that sell for at least $8 or $9 dollars, which leaves me with about 5 bucks after Amazon takes out its commission.  In the beginning, though, you may want to be more flexible. Why? You want to maximize your number of sales and feedback, and so if you have a really nice copy of a book that only sells for a few bucks, list it anyway. A happy customer may give you good feedback, and that’s worth real money because customers often buy from vendors with good feedback even if their books cost more.

Getting Feedback on Amazon is different

Now here’s why feedback is such a big deal: Amazon is different from eBay. On eBay, practically every customer leaves a review. That’s not the case at Amazon. Far from every Amazon customer will leave feedback. In fact, only a very small percentage of the buyers ever do. So anytime you’re able to do something that will make one of your buyers really happy, do it.

Deciding on a price

But back to deciding on what to sell. Decide if you’re able to get a price you’re willing to sell it for, and then also check how high or low its sales rank is because that will determine its chances of selling — ever.

Also be sure to check the various editions. Sometimes bargain priced versions of some books are hidden and don’t easily show up, yet once you list your book, you’ll find that there are quite a few available for much less.

How to find out how fast a book will sell

I have found that almost any book may sell eventually. However, books with a ranking under about 20,000 or even 50,000 have a much improved chance of selling fairly quickly – especially if you offer a nice copy at the best price – or close to the best price.

If you have books ranking under 1,000, you might as well put them on a special shelf for books to be wrapped and shipped right away, at least if you price yours competitively and they’re almost as good as new. They may sell before you get off your chair to take a break.

Decision time…

So now you sort your stack into books you are willing to sell, books that you’d rather keep, and books to take to your favorite local charity because it simply won’t be worth it to list them, have them sitting on your shelf, possibly for months, and then, if someone buys them, wrap them up and take them to the post office.

Business Books – The Must Read List for Successful Home Based Business

If you wish to have a very thriving home based business, getting the proper knowledge really is a must!

If you wish to be an effective entrepreneur or have a profitable home based business, you do not want to get your business training from academics. You’ll want to learn from people with real life business experience to become a profitable small business owner.

I’ve assembled a small list of my personal favorite business books. Reading through these excellent business books will definitely help you develop into a well rounded and successful entrepreneur as well as help you to run a flourishing home based business.

How to Win Friends & Influence People By Dale Carnegie

The author discusses means of growing professional relationships, a crucial first step to any successful home based business. He starts the book with “If You Want to Gather Honey, Don’t Kick Over the Beehive”. I always like to reread this book every five or ten years.

Rich Dad Poor Dad By Robert Kiyosaki

This is an educational storyline of a boy growing up with two dads; his father and his friend’s father who treated him as his own child. His Poor Dad encouraged him to perform well in school and to get a good job later in life. His Rich Dad encouraged him to master the power and practical knowledge of investing.

In general, this book is an excellent read. It will help you to build a solid foundational base for a long and profitable entrepreneurial career. I would recommend this book as a primer to your business understanding plus a must read for anybody who wishes to create wealth and financial self-sufficiency.

Think and Grow Rich By Napoleon Hill

The writer worked very closely with Dale Carnegie to develop this as well as other business books. Napoleon Hill shares with us the fifteen laws of success and thirteen principles of person achievement.

The One Minute Millionaire – The Enlightened Way to Wealth. By Mark Victor Hansen and Robert Allen

This misnomer titled book features a formula for creating wealth; it literally possesses a flow chart of “the one minute millionaire system”. The book lists a set of epiphanies that lead toward economic wealth.

The Millionaire Next Door By Thomas Stanley and William Danko

The authors compare and contrast “Under Accumulators of Wealth” to “Prodigious Accumulators of Wealth” to illustrate the main difference in habits and activities of rich individuals and everybody else. This is among the business books that will help you to get an introspective look at oneself.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People By Steven Covey

Steven Covey’s title truly does indeed say it all. He writes in regards to the specific characteristics and habits essential to be effective; this applies directly to owning a profitable home based business.

How Come That Idiot’s Rich and I’m Not? By Robert Shemin

This book may well just top my list of Business Books as my favorite. Although the writer isn’t particularly eloquent , he really did strike the nail on the head for me personally. The question is, if you happen to be doing all of the correct things, why are you not a lot more financially successful? He does a great job of summarizing all the other books on the list.

So that’s my listing of business books that I personally suggest to help you become a profitable business owner and to operate a lucrative home based business. Knowledge is power.
